The Legend
Narasimha Avataram
Narasimha is reckoned to be the fourth incarnation of Maha Vishnu. We may recall the story of how the Lord took this avatar to protect His sublime devotee, Prahlada.
Jaya and Vijaya were the sentries at Lord Vishnu's abode, Vaikunda. Incurring the curse of the sages like Sanaka, they took birth as Asuras, the sons of sage Kashyapa and Dithi — Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. The Lord killed Hiranyaksha in His avatar as Varahamurthy.
The resentful and angry Hiranyakashipu resorted to severe penance to please Brahma, the intention being to destroy Maha Vishnu. He got the apparently impossible boons he had wished for: neither man nor beast should kill him; his death should occur neither during the day nor at night; he should not be killed either with or without weapons. The invincible Hiranyakashipu began harassing and torturing the Devas and sages. The helpless Devas sought refuge in Lord Vishnu, who promised them that He would kill the Asura king without much delay.
In the meanwhile, Hiranyakashipu and his queen Kayadhu got a son, Prahlada. Even as a foetus, he heard tales about the legendarily great Lord Vishnu, narrated by sage Narada. He grew up as an unconditional devotee of the Lord. Hiranyakashipu was naturally not pleased with this. He tried every trick to make Prahlada hate the Lord, but all in vain. The child's devotion only intensified as the days passed.
One day, at his wit's end, the king raised the sword threateningly at his son and asked, “Where is your Vishnu?” The child answered that the Lord is omnipresent. “Is he in this pillar as well? Let us see, then!” — with those words, Hiranyakashipu struck forcefully at the nearby pillar.
It then split deafeningly and Lord Narasimha manifested Himself in His most terrible form. He placed Hiranyakashipu in His lap, sat on the threshold, and at the twilight hour, He pierced his chest with His sharp nails and thus killed him — adhering to all the parameters set by Brahma.
He pulled out the Asura's innards, threw it around his chest and bathed in blood, roaring terribly, sending shivers in everyone's spine, including the Devas'. Everyone there wondered how to calm down the furious Lord. It was the little Prahlada himself who approached Him fearlessly, with folded hands. He placated the Lord with winsome salutations and prostrated before Him. That is the famous Prahlada Sthuthi in the Bhagavatham.
The Lord gradually grew serene in response to it. He blessed the child cheerfully and disappeared. The Narasimhamurthy in this temple is believed to be in the mood of the Lord quietened down a bit after listening to Prahlada Sthuthi.

Who are our lifelong companions? Is it our spouse, children, friends or relatives? Never! All relationships end at the funeral pyre. But the results of our good and bad actions inevitably follow us wherever we go. Therefore the wise engage themselves in spiritual activities and take to the path of lasting well-being.
